OK, looking at the layout from standing in front of the computer, the chip was 
inserted with the wording on it upside-down. The pins that were gone, counting 
from the left side, were on the row facing the back of the computer. It was pins 
4,5, and 11.

Ah, the power light was intermittent. It wasn't on the first time I turned the 
][ on, so I tapped the case near the keyboard and it came on. I'm not sure if it 
was because of my tapping. I think it blinked off briefly during the 2nd or 3rd 
time I had it on.
