I approached this the wrong way, first looking for the places where the character
info was stored, then trying to modify the program to change variables.  Now I
have a much simpler way to cheat in this game.  I just write a few lines of BASIC
code to set the variables to what I want.  A good look at the code and some trial
and error have shown me all the major variables needed to beat the game.  If
anyone is interested, I can post the simple code I used.
