Re: Have any of you put this chip in your //gs?

: The reference Bill, wasn't to the mobo, but to the Transwarp
card for
: the file://e. There, a 65c02 runs at 4/3.6 mhz (the
documentation and claims
: are a bit confusing there), and has 256K of RAM; said RAM
mirrors the
: mobo 64K and the aux 64K, allowing your programs to run at the
higher
: speed, except with accessing video memory and some slots (like
the slot
: that has your floppy controller card in it.)
Well, my reasons why people aren't doing this were
in respective order of importance. #1 being cost.
To build a couple for you and your friends would
be feasible, but to make them desireable to all
would cost a fortune. #2 was time and energy. How
many Apple II'rs have the time to work on such a
thing, and if they do have the time, I'm sure they
can think of 101 things to do with it than build
a device that will probably cost several $100 to
make.
: PS: IF someone were able to recreate the Transwarp, using the
14 mhz
: 65c02 and 16 megs of RAM shouldn't be that much more, and maybe
less
: than using a 4 mhz 65c02 and 256K of DRAM.
A completely redesigned board would need to be
considered as the present Transwarp more than
likely has it's own limitations on speed even
though it runs faster. That 16 MB ram on a IIe
would be possible at the increased speed, but
there again we have the problem of who will be
willing to write drivers to utilize it all.
Especially since there will only be a few of them
built anyway. Probably be easier to build an
entire new IIe that utilizes the speed of the
14 MHz processor and a new disk drive that can
read the disk faster than at 1 MHz.
