There were several Apple II RPG's that loosely fit that description.
Could this one be TSR's Dungeon Computer Adventure? It also
sounds like the Ultima series, or maybe one of the similar clones
(Questron, or that one that specifically competed with Ultima V
and came out the same time in 1988-89; can't remember the name).

This sounds like "Odyssey: The Compleat Apventure" (sic)

The Sands of Egypt? Mask of the Sun? (neither came from EA though).
