I have had EXACTLY the same difficulty with PC downloads to a Mac. When I
first started my network adventure, the only connection I had to the outside
world was a 14.4 modem on a PC. Files downloaded from PC don't work and play
well on a Mac desktop....
There are a number of solutions. Matter of fact, the Network from Heck grew
out of my quest for these solutions.
First. Use Stuffit to unwrap this puppy. How? well, notice how the file comes
down to Mac Land from PC Land with a PC Icon? The Mac refuses to play with any
file that might still have Bill Gates' kooties so ya gotta fix that. Get
Stuffit.

Here is a download page: http://www.stuffit.com/downloads.html

I would suggest looking around and finding a copy of Stuffit 5.5 for this. It
works well on System 7.5.5 and earlier, and, if you are playing with a IIe card
you need 7.5.5 or earlier to make it go. Once you have Stuffit merely
drag/drop the PC icon of this file on to the Stuffit icon. Stuffit takes care
of the details.

If you REALLY wanna go to town with this, there are some way cool network cross
communication solutions. The top 3 of these (imho) are: PCMACLAN, DAVE and the
now discontinued COPSTALK. I prefer COPSTALK. Here is a page that discussess
many many many cross communication packages (except my favorite).

Getting ProDOS across the GREAT DIVIDE is still thoguh, the REAL challenge.
