Optimizing the data you're sending the printer might also help.  If you're
sending 300-dpi grayscale scans directly to the printer, even something
reasonably modern will probably still not run at its top speed.  Since the
material in question here most likely is text with some line drawings, a
threshold conversion from 8 bpp to 1 bpp would be a big win for not a huge
amount of work.  OCRing the text would produce an even bigger win, but would
require extensive proofreading...possibly a candidate for a crowdsourced
effort, if the finished documents were to become freely available.
