Is there an important difference I'm overlooking?

The first one you mention had a serial number under 2500 (rev 0). The
second one has a serial number around 30000, and has a rev. 3 or rev. 4
motherboard.

Ah, ok. After noticing the second unit had the older style bus connectors (with panel-mount ears) I just assumed it was a Rev. 0. When exactly did Apple stop shipping them with the original green connectors?

I'd hate to see what one with a single digit or two digit serial number
would go for.

Did they ever actually start with less than 4 digits? Sometimes vendors will begin at some arbitrary number, e.g. 1000.

I have an Apple ][ plus, serial number A2S2-68931, with a rev. 4
motherboard. Probably the closest I'll get to owning an early Apple ][,
unless I find someone local.

About ten or twelve years ago I was fortunate enough to luck into a mint Apple ][ with serial #1195. It's a prized possession and I have no plans to part with it. But it's interesting to see some of the prices folks will pay.
