ChessMaster 2100 problems with IIGS running System 6.0.1

I have a ROM3 Apple IIGS with 5MB of RAM and an internal HD.

If I boot the IIGS from the ChessMaster 2100 floppy disk, the games comes up
and works correctly (I'm assuming the System version on the floppy disk is 5
or lower).

However, if I boot the IIGS from the HD (which has 6.0.1 installed) and then
try to run the game (either from the floppy or by first copying the floppy
to the HD - and the game manual says you can do so), the IIGS hangs right
before displaying the ChessMaster 2100 "logo screen".

Any ideas (other than to continue to play the game by booting from the
floppy disk) are appreciated.
