Re: Localtalk gateway/bridge

Retro-computing and retro-networking is a terrible thing. I know. right now
I am attempting to revive a Sider/SASI drive using some bizzare old old
software (Thanks Wayne!) and a 1989 vintage Xebec card.
The Retro-bug will definitly lead to harder stuff like a TOPS network for
example, or..Try running NT Server 3.1 and an ISA Appletalk card on a PC )that
flavor recognizes such a NIC; later ones might, but I know that one works).

For some pointers on the sublect under discussion in this thread though might
I suggest a review of my wee write up found at:
http://www.cometbaby.com/~pilgrimer/mynet.htm
There you will find reference to a product called COPSTALK. This product is
no longer made, the company no longer exits, and it is no longer supported (If
you click www.copstalk.com from the Help screen you will get a suprise. make
sure the kids are not in the room! oh boy! <--for those who would be
offended: Copstalk's url was taken over by a Hong Kong based porno house)
Now, with that caveat out of the way ;)... COPSTALK will not work on NT but on
Windows 3.1 (A 16 bit version exists) 95 98 or ME it does fine and will
connect Macs to a PC net. If one Mac is running Localtalk Bridge then you can
also connect you GS or Appletalk card equiled IIe (sort of) to it. You cannot
directly map a PC drive to a GS but you can do a double hop, ie, map a Mac
drive, copy from the PC thene pick up the file on the GS. I do this all the
time in that I do not have a Mac directly on the internet so to get Mac files
I must download from the PC world (mostly that is; I do have a proxy server
and web clients on a couple of Macs now).
If you really must go the other way then Dave is your best bet but it will
cost you. t'aint cheap!. Even then, a Dave mapped drive from your PC may
apear on a Mac desktop but, in systems 6.0.7, 7.1, 7.5.n and all flavors of 8,
(don't know about 9 or X and also I am usin an earlier version of Dave and
Apple talk 3.0.3), but, it will NOT map via Appletalk to the GS that is,
Appletalk cannot then share it to your Apple II net.
  A terrible thing retro computing.
