Both of these issues (and some of your later points) were solved in the
official kit by replacing the baseplate (and back panel) of the machine.
A real "IIeGS" only retains the upper case and lid, keyboard, speaker
and power supply from the original machine.  (I assume the original
speaker was transferred over to the new baseplate rather than supplying
a new one.)

It sounds like Apple never intended the platinum IIe to be upgraded to a
IIgs, given the insufficient cable lengths for the speaker and power
supply.
