OK, that probably works, but I'd expect it to suffer from the same
problem - with some drives, it might not be able to detect the presence
of the drive unless you have a disk in it, so it will incorrectly remove
the icon.

In any case, 5.25" drives under GS/OS are annoyingly slow, and not just
at startup.  My preferred solution to 5.25" drives under GS/OS was
always to disable the slot 6 firmware unless I needed them (about once a
month, if that).
