Replacing the mechanism in a IIgs platinum 800k drive with a 1.44mb
one from a Mac does indeed turn it into a superdrive.
However while the 3.5" UniDisk does use the same 800k mechanism as
the platinum drives, it also contains considerably more electronics.
In a IIgs the platinum 800k drive is directly controlled by the 65816. The
3.5" UniDisk was design to work with a IIc. Aparantly the 1mhz 6502 isn't
fast enough to handle this extra so they built a complete computer into the
3.5" UniDisk to handle this. The faster IIc+ was able to handle the platinum
drives.
