They do seem to be pretty much backward compatible though I was surprised
that with a superdrive hooked up to the smartport the IIgs hardware can "see"
the HD/DD switch in the drive.

I was curious one night. A superdrive card handles 3.5" UniDisks as well as
800k and 1.44mb platinum drive. It seemed likely that putting a 1.44mb
mechanism into a 3.5" UniDisk would make the end product an 800k drive
no matter what it was connected to. Once I saw the board inside I knew it was
going to be 800k max. However I thought why not reassemble it with one of
those extra 1.44mb mechanisms I don't know what to do with. But all I got was
I/O errors so it was back to 800k. Actually  you could say I swapped 800k
mechanisms here as when I put it back I used a different 800k mechanism that
I'd previously cleaned and relubricated.
