The way I believe it works is that the data is written at the same speed
but the
drive changes the RPM when the head is over different parts of the disk.

The workstation cards are for the IIe, the IIgs has built-in Appletalk. I
seem
to recall reading somewhere that the card isn't compatible with GSOS though

I've never tried that. I thought I saw the software on Apples site a while
back.
If you can't locate it I can probably locate my copies.
