The invoice said 512kB. If that is the case, then it is usually a simple
task to upgrade the machine to ~1 MB -- and those Packard Bells may present
the solution. Find an old Intel box which uses the same type of chip RAM
that your IIgs's memory expansion card uses, buy then pillage! You are
probably looking for an XT class machine. Such machines should cost no
more than a couple of dollars.
Further upgrades? It all depends what you use your machine for. Your
best bet is probably to start using it, then figuring out what you need
from there. My guess is that most people would be happy with 4MB RAM, and
hard drive. But, if your youthful enthusiasm sends you into an upgrade
spree, the sky is pretty much the limit.
