Re: System 6.0.2?
Hi there,
I think DSL on the IIGS is quite possible. From what I have read on
a2central.com, the Marinetti TCP/IP software doesn't handle routers (and I
presume dynamically assigned IP's I assume) too well. So, to get DSL to
work on the GS, you'd probably have to get the LanceGS card, Marinetti AND
a STATIC ip from your local DSL provider.
Problem: most ISP's who offer home DSL connections offer dynamic IP's
(meaning using the god-awful connection software) which wouldn't work on
the GS. I think cable modems offer static IP's but I am not sure what
else is involved with getting it to work.
SO what can you do? Well, right now I have a DSL modem, a router
(Linksys DSL/Cable Router) and two PC's. The router can do "auto
connect" to the ISP and thus eliminates the use of the special DSL
connectivity software. So my PC's basically can call the DSL connection
on demand and the router will use DHCP to assign a non-routable IP to one
of my PC's.
So if the IIGS software can be worked to a point where it recognizes
the IP assigned by the router (a 192.xxx.xxx.xxx IP), then DSL should be
quite possible.
But this is all theory and may not make a whole lot of sense. But if
anyone who is more "technically" inclined can explain it better, then
please do! :)
