That's why I think they went in the wrong direction.  LPs had to be
handled with extreme care but cassettes could be tossed around without
too much worry.  Then CDs come out and we're back to having to be
extremely careful again.  :-)

That is another pet peeve of mine about CDs.  In a car, not only will
you not get the full benefit of the audio quality but you can also
endanger yourself and others whenever you go to change CDs (or you
could just not worry about the damage you'll do to the CD by grabbing
it wrong and not putting in back into a good protective case).  Also,
the way the format works makes it very prone to skipping unless you
add a bunch of extra hardware which increases the price of the player.

I'm buying or leasing a new car probably in the next week or so and
that is one thing I'll definitely make sure of.  That I have a
cassette deck and not a CD player.  :-)
