Saving Data with Casette on an Apple IIe

I borrowed an old tape recorder that belongs to my grandmother and it had
the mic. jack and the headphone jack.  I went to radio shack and purchased
mini jack wire that connects the two devices together.  I dont understand
the save process... Since I have no software on my computer, I am not sure
what to do, but I did get to this funny prompt by pressing Control+Reset....
Can I type a message in that prompt and save it? and if it is saved to the
casette, should I hear series of tones and beeps?
