The only disadvantage I can recall (and it's kinda small) is that some
memory-expansion cards won't fit without modification.  I upgraded my IIe to
a IIGS back in '92 with a kit that Shreve Systems was selling.  I replaced
my AE RamWorks III with Sequential's RAM-GS, but I had to clip the top front
corner off to get it to fit.  I was a little bit nervous about taking a
Dremel to a brand-new (and somewhat expensive) piece of hardware, but I
checked first to make sure no signal traces were in that part of the card,
and it's worked fine for the past seven years that way.

Since then, I've installed a clone-type 250W power supply inside my GS (take
the power-supply board out of its metal box and it'll barely fit...mount the
fan over a hole cut out under the keyboard), and one of these days I'll move
the hard drive inside the case (now that it's a single 320-meg drive instead
of a pair of 40s).
