The choice of computer isn't such an individual choice as you may
believe (unless you're going to use it in isolation of course, but
few do that today). Nowadays, when I'm asked by a computer newbie on
what to choose, I ask what they plan to do with it, and who they'll
mostly collaborate with and what computers they use. My advice is
usaully to try to get the same kind of computer that they use.

The differences nowadays are quite small anyway, and more a "religious"
than a practical issue. So the practical edvice becomes to try
to avoid as many system conversions as possible (these are always a
potential hassle) -- and you do that best by using the same system
as your collaborators.

For this reason my wife has two Macintoshes -- she's in the university
world, where Mac's are used most frequently. While I stick to PC's,
because that makes most sense in the world I am in. We never ever
quibble about that, becase to us it's a matter of practical choise,
not a matter of religion.
