As for the Apple IIGS versus the 8-bit Apple IIs I think the
great draw of the IIGS is that it had more capabilities but
was MORE stifled by Apple than the 8-bit Apples.  The
IIGS never had a chance however great it was.  And even
if it were a hundred times better, the way Apple treated it
the IIGS would STILL have not had a chance.  It is almost
tragic.  The IIGS, like every great hero cut down before
his time, is a legend.

To me, the love/hate (mostly hate) relationship Apple had
to the Apple II was what defined the Apple II series.  The
IIGS, being the last of the line and the greatest threat to
the Mac in Apple's eyes, was the MOST Apple II of the II
series because Apple put more effort and thought into
designing it and more effort and thought into killing it than
any other Apple II.
