GS monitors -- made of eggshells?

	I made my first eBay purchase towards getting a GS and getting it
expanded in December when I threw down $150 for a pretty full basic
system w/ monitor.  The monitor was cracked and dead in shipping.  So, I
ordered another one.  It, too (despite being well packed) was cracked in
shipping.  

	Never send a package using the US postal service.

	That aside, are GS monitors constructed of plastic that weak?  Or is it
age that does it to the plastic?  I am borrowing a friend's GS monitor,
and I don't expect him to come asking for it back, but I'd still like a spare.
