I agree with you, mostly. The GS and the Apple Toolbox have a steep
learning curve. It's not so much that they are hard, just that they
are different from what most of us are used to.

There is nothing that says you have to follow these guide lines, yeah
I know, people will b*tch about this statement. However, if you want
compatibility with other software, you should try. At the very least,
make sure that your programs won't harm anything else in the system
and then follow the FTA methods.

There is also the possibility of creating a whole new OS and system
methodology. Consider this, the original Unix system was created on
a system with less resources than a standard Apple2. So a *nix type
of multitasking OS and an X variant might be possible.

Now if you just want simple programs, try Orca C or maybe the EMBE
Modula2 compiler. For the Modula2 system you will need an Orca Linker
and maybe the shell. As I have the Pascal system, it works fine for
me. With these, you can mix in assembly as needed.
