You don't run across defective disk drives very often, they're pretty sturdy
devices. If the copies won't boot later I'd tend to think either the HD disks
didn't hold the magnetic pattern or another possibility is while you were
copying disks the heads became dirty enough to have difficulty reading some
disks. In any case if you don't already have one, a head cleaning disk is
pretty well esestial.
