What he is looking to do is create a new ROM with the appropriate
patches/additions in it. In other words, he wants to take the ROM
from a ROM 01 (or ROM 3) machine and apply the TS2 (or TS3) patch to
it and then take all that code and put it in a new ROM. This new ROM
would then have all the current tools from System 6.0.1 so you
wouldn't need any TSx patches in System.Setup, the toolbox routines
would run slightly faster and the toolsets would use less of the
system's RAM because they would no longer be loaded from disk.
Not a bad idea but certainly not a simple one to carry out.
The biggest problem I can see is the ROM size. The ROM 01 only have
128 KB of ROM space built in and there has been a lot of new and
updated tools added to the system since that machine was released.
Just look at the ROM 3. It came out with System 5.x I believe and to
accomodate all the new tools for that OS the ROM size was increased to
256 KB.
The ROM 3 has some extra space in it that could be borrowed. Just
remove the "Apple II" sound sample and the reference to it so that the
system won't try to play it and you could use that space for updated
or new tools. However, I still don't think that would give enough
space to hold everything.
It seems to me that you would have to do some hardware hacking on your
IIgs or build a ROM card to be able to increase the ROM size to
accomodate all the new tools. This could still be a fun project for
someone who is really interested in doing this, though. It would be
especially useful if the ROM card or whatever was made with EEAROMs so
that the ROM could be updated as new tools are released/updated. :-)
