Yes you can, if it is a SCSI hard drive, which is the kind most Macs use.
Newer Macs can use FireWire or USB hard drives, which will not work on
an Apple IIgs. If you're not sure, here are two ways to tell:
1. Most all external SCSI hard drives use Centronics-50 female
connectors. These connectors have near-triangular clips on each end
which clip onto the cable's connector once you've plugged it in. Look
for these clips.
2. An external SCSI hard drive would also have a SCSI ID control. This
would look like a small window with the ID number showing through and two
buttons to adjust the ID number up and down, or a rotary dial that you
can set from 1 to 6.
Also, if you want to use a SCSI hard drive with an Apple IIgs, you will
need a SCSI card. You have two options:
1. Find a used or resold Apple II High Speed SCSI card.
2. The more attractive option is to purchase a RAMFast SCSI Card from
Sequential Systems at http://www.sequential.com/ . I say it's a more
attractive option because the card is obtainable in never-been-used
condition, and also because the card provides faster hard disk access
than the Apple II High Speed SCSI card.
Hope this helps!
