Joe, Bev is right. It won't be fair. Remember, you are asking a
DeskJet to match the speed of a laser printer. A LaserJet is
inherently fast. A DeskJet must paint the page.

However, I do have an ink jet connected the IIGS printer port.
I no longer have AW classic, but I do have ProTERM. Let me
start up the IIGS and see how long it takes to spit out a printed
page with zero margins.

Ok here goes. My printed page took 50 seconds. However,
ProTERM displayed the "printing" message for only one
second. THAT's how long it took to zap the printed page
across. I'm guessing it is about the same at your end. The
other 49 seconds were the ink jet printer going through the
initializing noises (clearing the print head I think, which took
16 seconds) and the print head moving back and forth to
paint the page. I think your 33 second speed comes almost
entirely from the fact that the LaserJet does not have to
initialize the print head and paint the page this way.

Still, our tests do reveal one thing. Assuming that AW on
your end was like ProTERM on my end (ie. only displaying
"printing" message for a second) then the page got sent
through the interface or port within one second. Now what
actually happened was probably the parallel port zapping
the page across in 1/4 of a second and the serial port
taking 1 second, but to human perception and for all intents
and purposes, such a small difference does not matter for
text based programs.
