Yes you can, but this requires an SCSI card.  Either
Apple High Speed SCSI card or RamFAST card.  The
RamFAST card is some $120 new and both cards are
about half that used.

For the same price, you can get a 500MB internal HD
plus controller for the IIGS at http://www.allelec.com/
Alltech Electronics. The hard drive is called the Focus.

The Focus is more elegant since it is internal and it
comes with the OS preinstalled and freeware and
shareware titles.  It is usually cheaper than the SCSI
option.
