In copying Mac files you do get a thermometer pretty much the same as on the
IIgs.
Deleting a file is usually slightly harder than with a IIgs.  Unless you hold
down the
option key while emptying the trash, you'll be asked if you're sure you want to
remove
it permanently.  Sounds like you did it correctly.  While copying a single file
to floppy
it'd be virtually impossibly for anyone familiar with a IIgs or Mac to
accidentally erase a
file

Chances are it's too late but deleting a file is not the same as formatting.
If  it hasn't
been written over then it'll still be on the hard drive.  I'd suggest  keeping
the
powerbook shut off and taking it to an expert. It's possible you might recover
all of
his book.
