First of all, forget trying to use an 8-bit (ie. Apple IIe/IIc or earlier)
emulator to display a slide show. The graphics modes of these
models are just too rough. Unless you want to display monochrome
560x198 pictures, that is.
It is best to use an Apple IIGS emulator.
Now if you are going to display your slide show on a real IIGS, I
would normally recommend using 3200 color graphics mode. This
mode normally renders an image in 320x200 resolution and can
convert a GIF or TIFF graphic pretty well. It resembles the results
of Amiga HAM modes, if you are familiar with them. However, no
current emulator can emulate the IIGS' 3200 color graphics mode.
The next best mode I recommend is the IIGS' 256 color graphics
mode. This one is also 320x200 pixels in resolution. It does a
fairly good job with GIFs. I think emulators support this mode.
There are extensions that allow Applesoft to BLOAD Apple IIGS
super high resolution graphics modes like 3200 or 256, but I would
just use a slide show program like DreamVoir. DreamVoir is
freeware and can play a SoundSmith (15 voice MOD-like music
player) soundtrack while displaying 3200 or 256 color slide shows.
Good luck!
