Practically any SCSI CD-ROM will work, but that's not the problem.
Although there are quite a few (but not many) CD-ROMs for the
Apple II, they are usually specifically for the Apple IIGS model
which can access HFS and ISO9660 format CD-ROMs.
The Apple IIe can only use ProDOS CD-ROMs, and the only
one that you can currently get is the Golden Orchard CD-ROM.
This one has a single ProDOS partition and many HFS ones.
Naturally, the HFS ones are only readable on the IIGS. Thus,
your selection of CD-ROMs is basically a small part of a single
disc.
However, if you can find a CD-ROM drive for free or a few
bucks, it may be worthwhile. After all, even if you can only
access the ProDOS partition of one disc, that's still 32MB of
freeware and shareware! Good luck!
