I'd expect to pay more than that for an external. There are people who think
a 300e is still worth $50. I did get a good deal on my 600e, I got it for $50
a few months back.

I use Verbatim discs, which are $15/ten pack at Sam's. They're a blue color
on the bottom. They work trouble free in my CD150 and audio players tho.
But since all my stuff is ancient, only my CD-RW can read RW discs.
