It still doesn't explain IIc pin 5, which should not be connected to
what is actually pin 6 on the PC. Both of these signals are flow
control inputs to the respective computer, and the IIc pin 5 must be
connected to an active flow control output on the PC (pin 4 or 7), or
the IIc won't receive reliably.
(The only reason this might have been working is that an unconnected
flow control input is probably floating to the active state on the IIc.)
