You did put the card in the slot the correct way around, I hope!

If not, it is probably damaged now, and the motherboard may have been
affected as well.  Reversing a standard slot card is certainly lethal,
but might be less so for an auxiliary slot card, since everything on the
slot runs between +5V and ground (no +12V, -12V and -5V power supply
pins).

If it is a short enough card, it might be difficult to tell the correct
orientation.  The chips should be on the side facing away from the power
supply.  To be absolutely sure, look for pin 1 on the card (it should be
labelled).  Pin 1 should go at the keyboard end of the slot, which
should also be labelled.

The symptoms you describe sound like the card is causing some of the
major bus signals or clocks to be forced to the wrong state.  It could
just be a faulty card, of course.
