The "<chechmark>" is Spectrum is used to indicate a RETURN. Spectrum
would send the ATZ<RETURN> and upon getting a response from the modem
(usually OK), it would then send the rest of the init string.
ProTerm to my knowledge doesn't support anything like that (please
correct me if I'm wrong, it's been a long time since I've seen
ProTerm) and the modem will likely ignore everything after the ATZ.
A good place to start with init strings is just by using ATZ. This
usually goes to the default for the modem which is what a lot of
comm programs use.
