I was able to boot fine from a floppy.  I tried a different 80 column
card and it made no difference.  Finally I checked the (now in
hindsight) "obvious" - the CF card itself.  I found another 128MB card
from our old camera and repartitioned and formatted it for the
Microdrive and Voila!  Everything works as it should.

So now I'm wondering, do CF cards have a limited "shelf life"?
