I just tested this on my IIgs and Randy and David are right. You do
not need to use the Apple key.
However, the part I didn't know until David posted that message about
switching to 80 column mode on the //c is that you don't need to type
PR#3 to enable the 80 column firmware when using a //c or IIgs.
On my IIgs, if I am in 40 column mode with the checkerboard cursor (80
column firmware inactive) and I press ESC then the 8 key, I am
switched into 80 column mode with the solid block cursor (80 column
firmware active). Then I can switch back and forth between 40 and 80
column modes using the ESC, 4 and ESC, 8 keypresses respectively.
By the way, for those who don't know yet, to disable the 80 column
firmware, type ESC then press CTRL-Q.
