Apple 2C Question

This looks like the right newsgroup to get some help with the 2C which has
gone disfunctional in my wife's classroom. When I try to boot up it does
start and with the system disk It gets as far as the initial menu and then
the screen goes crazy-into a mostly linear patters. When I try to boot up
on non system disks I get a message �Check Disk Drive�. The unit has a
second drive, is there a key command to have the boot up disk default to
the second drive? Is the motherboard dead?  All help appreciated.
