--> Here in Canada (and, I'm sure, in the States) when one leaves the
    phone off-hook for about a minute or so - it goes into a rapid,
    high-pitched `off-hook' beeping - this is to let anyone nearby
    know that the handset was left off the hook. It is an annoying
    sound, on purpose (for that very reason, of course). However,
    after about 8 or 9 minutes (or thereabouts) this signal ends and
    one is left with blessed silence and I think that is what he was
    refering to - the fact, that eventually, silence will reign . . .

    At this point, one can do the xfer as described. As to the very
    irritating noise - just leave the handset under a pillow to muffle
    the sounds and go have a cuppa tea. When you return; it _should_
    be silent and you can proceed. Good luck.
