Actually I'm only talking files which I archive to save disk space.

I've not run across many files which are stuffed and are useful on non
Mac boxes myself

It's user friendly, it supports forked files and custom icons etc, and most
because it's the standard. Why use anything else? If people want to make
files that are usable on other systems it's no problem. But otherwise it's
a good idea to adhere to the standard. And I doubt that very many people
give much thought to using other formats.
