Rudy,
It really doesn't matter if you agree with me.
If this is the extent of error testing then I really don't think
we can assume that GUPP causes the problem. More than likely, the
problem is present already in your system but the addition of GUPP
triggers it (still, I don't see how--I'd be interested in a
cause-effect relationship explanation).
I have GUPP installed and have absolutely _zero_ infinite loop
errors. So, logically, your assumption of a cause-effect relationship
does not seem to hold water.
For anyone having this problem, the simplest rememdy is to delete
the Desktop icon file in the icons folder (it's invisible so you'll
have to check the show invisible file box in the finder preferences)
of any mounted hard drive partitions. Now, the regular icon files are
also susceptible to getting munged but usually don't unless you are
editing/adding icons quite a bit. Another trigger for this error is
having more than one type of icon for the same type of file
(especially if the icons are set up to catch any filename).
The desktop file is _very_ susceptible to getting corrupted because
the finder is always updating it. One thing you might try is deleting
the desktop file or locking it (once it has been updated by the
programs that use their own icon resources). Or uncheck the box in the
finder preferences that saves finder info (icon and open window
placement)--this completely stops the finder from updating the desktop
file. The last option is what I have done and is probably why I no
longer get the "Walking Icon/Infinite Loop" error. Again, GUPP has
never caused this problem on my system so I think we can rule it out
as the offending init.
BTW, this issue has been discussed ad nauseum on Genie and no one has
ever linked it to GUPP or other patches to the system. The
two-approach method Apple took toward implementing icons in the GSOS
finder made for a lot of bugs related to icon files. Many of the
people who discussed this problem are now on Genie. It might be a
good place to go if you want more info on the topic.
