Actually as you most likely know, there are products that can bridge localtalk
and ethernet together. So you can use ethernet where you can and localtalk
everywhere else. I can access my ethernet Macs from localtalk boxes as well
as print to my localtalk printers from ethernet.
On the speed thing, I would say that my in experience, localtalk file transfers
are at least as fast as a floppy or single speed CD. The host Mac does the
file retrieval, which is typically much faster than on an Apple II, so there
is no latency for file access that way. Floppies and CDs on IIs aren't overly
fast.
