Hypertape ?

Merry Birth, Happy Lights, Cool Kwanzaa, etc...

Okay, I have a Hypertape 40 meg tape backup (uses DC2000 carts) and
just the other day the *one* tape I had that worked pooped out on me.

I'm using a GS ROM01 with a RamFast, which has the utils to work with a
tape drive, but see as far as I can tell this is like a One For All
remote: I can get my box to play and record, I just can't set the
time cuz I lack that button. In other words, I can't format a tape.

Inserting a new tape into the drive, it spins the tape and doesn't find
any "header" info. The drive's light flashes. But I have no way to
convince the drive to do something about it -- using the RamFast utils
results in I/O Error and Disk Not Found errors because (far as I can
guess) the computer can't talk to the drive once the drive has decided
that it can't work with the tape. This is annoying as hell. My q.:

Any suggestions on how to convince the drive/computer to let me format
a tape? Surely there's gotta be a way on the GS, like a util or...

As far as I can tell, and I was going to do this yesterday on my dad's
computer but neither of us had a DB25-to-Cent50 onhand, arrrgh: I have
the Hypertape utils disk for the Mac, and I'm assuming that it has the
secret ingredients to force a format (I lack docs, and the info file on
the disk says nothing about formatting); I need to find a Mac user so
that I can hitch up my wagon and have that machine do the work. I know
a formatted tape *does* work properly on my GS, I'm okay from there. I
live on the other side of the state from my family so I won't have the
let-his-Performa-perform-it option available to me for several months.
Have put out a local request for time with a Mac in the meantime.

Email your suggestions, posts to the newsgroup get lost or buried...
