Welcome to comp.sys.apple2. I invite you to read the
comp.sys.apple2 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) at
http://www.visi.com/~nathan/a2/faq/csa2.html Section 4.6 covers
inkjets and Apple IIs, and contains more in depth info than this
response.

According to HP's web site, I think you can with the Harmonie or
Independence driver packages. The Windoze-only Deskjets won't work
(i.e. 820Cse), but if it has MS-DOS capabilities (as the 870Cse does)
Harmonie should be able to talk to it. The specs on the 870Cse say
it's got both a serial and a parallel interface on it; this printer is
supposed to be Appletalk-network happy, but no GS drivers exist for
networked HP printers. You should be able to use it with either the
57600 serial port to a GS (and therefore the HP Deskwriter Harmonie
drivers), or the parallel interface connected to a parallel card in
your GS.

Harmonie and Independence only provide drivers for GS programs that
use the standard driver setups; ProDOS 8, DOS 3.3 and other earlier
programs may not be able to talk to these (or most other inkjets)
