help with null modem

I have a problem using a null modem cable and am wondering if I have
something setup wrong. I have a standard modem cable for the GS that
i've used with external modems and I know works. I have a null modem
cable that i've used between two pc's and I know that works. Can I
just hook up the null modem cable to the end of the gs modem cable and
the other end to the pc? When I do this, I get these results:

1: no characters from the pc appear on the gs when typing.
2: typing on gs appears on the pc
3: can't send files either way.

any help?
