Tell me about it.  I did this once and literally blew the top off of
the chip (a 74LS125 if I remember correctly).

I still have the chip with the crater in it as a souvenier just
because I've never seen a chip self destruct so violently.

The really wild part though, is that I just dropped a replacement chip
in and everything else continued to work fine.
