   The modem port bug affected a fair number (not 100%) of //c users
with the 255-revision of the motherboard, causing modem connects over
abut 2400 not to work correctly. The Apple offer for //c upgrades has
expired. The main way to get a non-255 //c motherboard nowadays is
usually with a case, etc along with the motherboard, so you may want
to just keep the 255 //c and add more computers.
