I don't see any reason why you can't connect a 56k modem to a GS.  Spectrum
allows the port speed set to 57600 which is fast enough for a 56k modem.
If you find you live in an area where you can't get a 56k connection
(Rockwell claims they found a solution to CO switch problem), the 38400
port speed will still be fast.

I'm still skeptical that the product will actually work as claimed (from
the ISP point of view).  Recent tests show that the 56k modem is only
20% faster than a 28.8 modem.
