I don't know for sure, but that's not what I heard.  Of course the only 
ones that really know are the programmers involved.  I know Burger Bill 
took a shot.  I believe Greg Templeman and possible Steve Dizbrow did 
also.  Dave Lyons is the one that, I think, got the thing to compile.

As for the financial aspect, Jerry Kindall (then with QC) said they paid 
Claris some 6-figure amount for the rights to the program & code.  They 
were hoping for a (relatively) painless upgrade/bug fix they could sell.  
Since a complete rewrite would involve too much development cost, they 
did not think they could recoup their investment (in a complete rewrite), 
so they canned that idea.  Basically QC had to take a loss on that 
6-figure fee, and AWGS remains unchanged at version 1.1.
