I have used the MSDOS tools (shareware, forget the author's name) to 
format MSDOS disks using an AE HD connected to a superdrive card.  Each 
disk I had to format twice before it worked.  Don't remember the error, 
but the second time the formatting worked.

Can't replicate the error as my controler card died :(
